In June of 2013 the actress Rosa Novell was diagnosed with cancer. Fighting the disease, the treatment affected her optic nerve and she finally went blind. Without sight but full of courage, she decided to shoot, with director Agustí Villaronga, fragments of a Catalan version of a play about the Virgin Mary, titled Mary’s Will, to leave behind a memory and a testimony. Her approach to this work eventually became her own will.

“It is difficult to see it without tears or sobs, but the force of her commitment and the tone, almost dreyerian, of her look, ends up winning. The black and white, the austerity. The face of the actress, with very short hair and blind but burning eyes, makes me think of the pain and fierceness of Joan of Arc.”
El País. Marcos Ordoñez. 2 March 2017
“Although she is at death’s doors, she is still an actress interpreting a role. Till her last breath, she was what she wanted to be: an actress. This is the real will of Rosa.”
